Julia Roberts Jokes About Reuniting with My Best Friend’s Wedding Costar Dermot Mulroney

Reunited and it feels so good!

It’s been five years since Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney last shared a screen together, but the real life pals didn’t have any trouble finding their on-screen chemistry again!

“There is no ‘dusting off,’ ” Roberts, 50, told reporters at the Los Angeles premiere of their new series Homecoming on Wednesday. “It is so great.”

Catching sight of Mulroney, 54, on the press line, the actress remarked, “I’m talking about you! Are you talking about me?!”

“I was telling them that we had to make sure that we had all of our nuts and bolts in the same place,” he replied, having clearly just been asked a similar question.

“We always have our nuts in the same place, but not always the bolts,” she quipped.

The pair first played opposite of each other in 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding before reuniting for 2013 film August: Osage County.

Opening up about the pair’s close relationship, Mulroney told PEOPLE last month that “after this many years, I don’t make the habit of hanging out in other people’s trailers, other people’s dressing rooms, with one exception.”

“We’ve both been at it for a while and have had the great fortune of working together now — it’s our third time,” he remarked, while attending the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, adding that it was “a privilege” to work with her again.

In Homecoming, a psychological thriller series, Roberts plays Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at a secret government facility, while Mulroney plays Anthony, her boyfriend.

Mulroney previously told PEOPLE that despite her superstar level of fame, he wasn’t intimidated by Roberts when he first met her during an audition for My Best Friend’s Wedding.

“To be honest with you, I’d never seen her in a movie previous to that either,” Mulroney remarked. “But we all knew she was a star when we laid eyes on her when she was a teenager in her first movies, Mystic Pizza, Pretty Woman. I never saw those movies until after I worked with her years later.”

Their off-screen relationship has remained strong even decades later.

“I’ve had a great friendship with her and would push these guys out of the way to say something nice about her,” Mulroney shared.

Homecoming arrives on Amazon Prime Nov. 2.

A tale of two Julias: Inside the making of the edgiest roles of Julia Roberts’ career

Julia is on the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly.

“Let’s call it a jubilee!” Julia Roberts quips when reminded that this year is the 30th anniversary of her big-screen debut in 1988’s Satisfaction. The film is mostly forgettable, save for the star’s first major role. But what followed was hit after hit: Pretty Woman. Sleeping With the Enemy. My Best Friend’s Wedding. Notting Hill. Erin Brockovich. Wonder. So a lavish anniversary gala isn’t that far out of left field. “I’ve been saying [I’ve been working] 30 years for 20 years,” jokes the 51-year-old actress in this week’s EW cover story (the photo shoot was so beautiful there are actually TWO different covers). “No, it feels like an accomplishment. If you made watches for 30 years, you would be proud of that.”

While she has yet to unveil a Julia Roberts line of timepieces, the Oscar winner does have two projects this fall that are already garnering acclaim and awards talk: The actress takes on her first major TV-series role as a caseworker on Amazon Prime Video’s paranoia thriller Homecoming, which begins streaming Nov. 2. Then she plays a mother struggling to keep her drug-addicted son clean and sober in Ben Is Back, out Dec. 7. Both roles are complicated women but hinge on Roberts’ innate likability. “Her baseline of charisma and talent is so high that her real skill is being able to not have anything diminish that,” says Homecoming costar and good friend Dermot Mulroney. Adds Back writer-director Peter Hedges, “She’s a movie star who happens to be a great actress, and that’s not always the case.”

Roberts filmed both projects within weeks of each other, and now they’re being released in similar proximity. “I feel like it would be nice if they came out a little further apart so I could rest on my laurels a bit,” she admits over a salmon wrap and sweet potato fries at a Malibu restaurant. “At press conferences, one person will ask you something about Homecoming and then you get super invested in that whole idea, and then someone else asks a question about Ben Is Back, and so it’s a little dizzying.” So you don’t experience similar whiplash, dear reader, we took the liberty of giving you two Julia stories for the price of one.

Roberts gave the customary speech when she accepted, noting that she never ever goes shopping, but manages to look great at every event thanks to her team — including stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who was also being honored tonight.

Julia Roberts: How ‘Homecoming’ Co-Star ‘Saved Her Life’ on First Day of Shooting

It’s not every day one can say they once saved Julia Roberts’ life.

But her “Homecoming” costar Shea Whigham can.

“Did she tell you how I saved her life?” Whigham asked Variety Wednesday night at the Amazon series’ premiere in Los Angeles.

The two were shooting a scene together on the first day of production when Whigham saw a flag — a large piece of fabric in a metal frame used to block the sun during filming — above them come loose from its base.

“It started flying toward her head and I didn’t really know her at the time and I had to jump in and sort of envelop her, which was really kind of weird. She was like, ‘What the hell?’ and then she saw the flag on the ground.”

Roberts confirms the incident.

“He did save my life,” the Oscar winner told Variety. “I do say he saved my life but if someone put my feet to the fire and ask, ‘Did he save your life?,’ I’d say, ‘He at least saved me a trip to the hospital.’”

Showrunner and director Sam Esmail said he watched it all go down on a monitor. “At first I wanted to yell at Shea,” he said. “He kind of jumped on her, but then I saw the flag.”

In lighter news from the set, Esmail revealed that he and Roberts enjoyed playing board games together.

“She great at mahjong and Anomia,” he said. “She got me hooked on mahjong.”

“Homecoming” starts streaming on Amazon on Nov. 2.
